Losing and maintaining weight

Part 1: Making Weight

Many wrestlers feel that they need to lose weight to be more competitive. But that backfires when wrestlers use unhealthy and even dangerous weight loss methods. Instead of improving performance, improper weight loss impairs performance and can even seriously hurt the wrestler.

If you must lose weight, it's best to do so slowly. The following procedures are based on the measurement of your body composition. This will allow you to lose fat weight, not water or muscle weight. Muscle and water are both vital for optimal performance.

The American Academy of Pediatrics have set 5% as the minimum percent body fat for males over 16 years to ensure good health. Having less than 5% body fat can lead to impaired performance and serious health consequences. But there is no scientific evidence that you will perform any better at 5% body fat than at 8% or 10% body fat.
