Mental Training

Part 5: Off-Season Mental Training

Just like physical training, the off-season is the best time to develop your mental toughness! During the season, it's hard to improve mental toughness because you are using your mind to improve your technique and discipline yourself in other areas. Take the time to become mentally tougher, while your mind is not occupied with the major concerns of the season.

The other advantage to the off-season is that you can physically wear yourself out without affecting your performance. Pushing your physical stamina is the best way to push your mental stamina.

Put yourself in uncomfortable positions, and learn to resist and thrive in them! Here are a few suggestions to get started:

  1. Go for a long, hard run - several miles, running hard the whole way through
  2. Do 25 dumbell stairs without stopping - hold 30 lb dumbells in your hands while running stairs
  3. Push a car for 20 minutes straight
  4. Work out in a sauna - make sure the sauna is very hot

These are just a few ideas. Be creative! Find a way to push yourself to the point where you can go on...then keep going!

This is where you make gains. You'll be able to draw on these experiences when the season gets underway.
