Physical Training and Endurance

Part 3: Wrestling/Drilling

As tournaments approach, practices should begin to get shorter and more intense. This will allow you to peak at the end of the season. By this time, your weight should be under control and you should have developed a good base of endurance.

As with weight lifting, drilling should be every other day up until two days before competition.

Don't waste time with long drilling sessions as the season progresses. You should not be in the wrestling room for two hours. Just remember, short practices need to be more intense! Focus on what you are doing, and don't goof around during training sessions.

Morning Drills

Here are some examples of team drills from J Robinson's Training Newsletter:

Drill on your own for a few minutes to stretch out a little and warm up. Then a coach will begin calling out drills to follow. For each of these drills, one wrestler works against the other for about 30 seconds, then they switch.

  • Singles, doubles, etc
  • Keeping a guy off your head - Your opponent tries to get a collar tie, and you fight him off
  • Shot, re-shot - Take a shot, as soon as he stops, you shoot again and catch him off guard
  • Stop shot, counter shot - Defend opponent's shot and then shoot on him
  • Pummel match - One minute all out push match, work on positioning

Be creative with these drills. Work on techniques that are match-specific and need improvement.
Remember, don't spend too much time drilling, but when you do drill, be intense!
